For more than 170 years, Chicago Theological Seminary has prepared bold leaders committed to putting theology into action. Today, CTS and Yale Divinity School are taking a historic step toward a shared future, pursuing an affiliation that would carry CTS’s justice-centered mission forward as the Chicago Theological Institute at Yale Divinity School.
Rooted in shared commitments to theological education, public leadership, and justice, this proposed affiliation creates a new pathway for extending CTS’s mission and expanding access to theological formation within an institution with the reach and resources to help carry that work forward for generations to come.
Theological education is changing, and CTS has long evolved to meet the needs of each generation. Through thoughtful discernment, CTS and Yale Divinity School have identified an opportunity to bring together complementary strengths and shared commitments.
CTS brings a 170-year legacy of justice-centered theological education and deep experience in accessible online learning. Yale Divinity School brings its own remarkable legacy, global reach, and the resources of one of the world’s leading universities. Together, we envision a strong institutional home where CTS’s mission can continue to grow and shape theological education for generations to come.
Under the proposed affiliation, CTS will conclude its degree programs while supporting every currently enrolled student on a pathway toward degree completion. CTS is expected to ultimately become the Chicago Theological Institute at Yale Divinity School, creating a new platform for CTS’s mission focused on continuing education and online certificate programming within the broader YDS community.
The affiliation remains subject to institutional, accreditation, and regulatory approvals. As the process moves forward, we will continue to share updates with our community.
CTS remains committed to supporting every currently enrolled student on their pathway toward degree completion. Students will receive direct communication and individualized guidance about what the transition means for their academic pathway.
