CHICAGO – August 12, 2026

The University of Chicago and Chicago Theological Seminary have agreed to conclude the lease arrangement under which CTS has occupied the University of Chicago-owned building at 1407 East 60th Street since 2012.

This agreement marks the formal close of a partnership that began in 2008, when the two institutions entered a collaborative real estate arrangement reflecting their shared engagement in the Kenwood, Hyde Park, and Woodlawn communities and in the advancement of rigorous scholarship. The conclusion of the lease is the result of direct, respectful conversations between the senior leadership of both institutions, reflecting the mutual regard that has characterized this collaboration from its beginning.

Chicago Theological Seminary, founded in 1855 on the conviction that theology must serve justice, has prepared bold leaders for public life across 170 years. Because CTS has delivered many of its graduate programs fully online for more than a decade, this transition positions the Seminary to continue its academic mission in increasingly accessible ways. CTS will welcome its continuing students this fall, support them toward degree completion, and celebrate another graduating class in the spring of 2027. CTS looks forward to announcing in the coming months its creative plans for continuing its mission in the evolving landscape of theological education.

Effective September 1, 2026, the University of Chicago will resume full stewardship of the building at 1407 East 60th Street. The University has begun developing plans for the facility to advance UChicago’s mission in education and research, continuing its role as a vibrant part of the community.
