Join us for the first Wednesday Gathering of 2025! Our guest will be Rev. Dr. Susan Thistlethwaite, in conversation with Rev. Dr. Sharon Ellis Davis, about Dr. Thistlethwaite’s new book, Surfacing: A Kristin Ginelli Mystery. Dr. Thistlethwaite will open up a cruicial conversation about women’s fears and experiences with sexual abuse in our increasingly unsafe and fraught context.

Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite is President Emerita and Professor Emerita of Chicago Theological Seminary. She has a Ph.D. from Duke University, a Masters of Divinity (Summa Cum Laude) from Duke Divinity School and a B.A. from Smith College.

An ordained minister of the United Church of Christ since 1974, she is the author or editor of thirteen academic books, including two different translations of the Bible.

Upon her retirement from CTS she became a fiction writer, publishing seven mystery novels. She has described these fiction books as “theology as performance art,” that is, a way to show liberation theology in action. Dr. Thistlethwaite is also well-known media commentator and has written numerous columns for the Washington Post and the Huffington Post as well as the Chicago Tribune. She now has her own substack.
