Course Schedule
*Registering for a Synchronous course requires regular attendance at the weekly 3-hour class session (via Zoom).
*A Flex course allows students to complete the entire course remotely (mostly asynchronously), but offers one or more in-person opportunities to come together for an exceptional learning experience that substitutes for some of the online work.
*Courses ending in O are completely online.
*A Hybrid means the course is both online and in-person. Students are typically required to be in person for one week while a majority of the course will be online.

RH 405O/ 605O Very Different Visions: Jewish, Christian and Islamic Notions of the Human O/S
Christianity speaks of original sin. Rabbinic Judaism teaches we have competing inclinations for good and evil. Islam affirms that we are born with fitra, an innate disposition that makes us capable of recognizing goodness, of recognizing God. These fundamentally different religious conceptions of human nature intersect with a broad swath of religious and social convictions, shaping some of the challenges of navigating religious difference today. We will explore diverse ideas about creation, sin, sex, messiah, body/soul, and more within and among the “Abrahamic” traditions.
LM 454O/S Trauma and Healing: Caring for Self, Family & Community This course aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of trauma at the individual, familial, and societal levels, including its impact on physical, spiritual, and psychological well-being. Students will study various forms of trauma from an intercultural perspective and explore how systematic oppression affects symptoms and recovery. The course will also help students identify their strengths and areas for growth to foster healthier relationships with themselves and others.
TEC 605O God and Philosophy
This course will be devoted to reading and discussing some of the major Western philosophers on the question of God. The second half will be devoted to examining the question in relationship to the 20th century continental philosophy. The course will be conducted as a weekly online seminar. The interested students will need to have some background in philosophy or interest in reading philosophical texts.
CCS 410/510 Trauma-Informed Chaplaincy
Trauma is the emotional response to distressing events; it impacts a person’s executive function and ability to self-regulate. This course introduces key concepts to learners including individual and collective trauma, an overview of the science of trauma, and consideration of the cultural contexts of chaplaincy and trauma. As well, students learn and practice evidence-based spiritual care interventions, develop personal frameworks and habits for a lifetime of work, and identify strategies for implementation in their context.
*This is a Center for Chaplaincy Studies Course. While scholarships do not apply, financial aid does apply. **Online course
CCS 422/522 Grief and Lament
Grief is one of the most ubiquitous experiences for a spiritual care provider in any context. Situations of death and dying call for a spiritual care provider to employ a cross-section of ministerial roles and functions: individual care, ritual praxis, ethical consultation. In the wider social contexts in which we serve, large-scale losses call for grief care on a communal level: from the increasing precarity of democratic governments and the breakdown of institutions we’ve depended upon, to the collapse of the climate and extinction of species on a mass scale, to the loss of landscapes integral to our sense of self-in-community. The course develops practical theological approaches to grief and loss on scales from the individual, to the communal, to the planetary.

Faith Moves
This course will explore the role of faith and spirituality in guiding public ministry and leadership. Students will examine historical and contemporary intersections of faith, spirituality, values, and the public square and community organizing as a model. The course is designed to allow students to obtain an awareness of how faith has informed various aspects of public ministry and to help students develop their own understanding of how faith has and can inform their public ministry.
